The History of Greek Food
Greek food dates back over 4,000 years. It can be found enjoyed all over the world. Greece’s cuisine can be traced right back to 320 BC when Archestratos created the first cookbook in history. Greek cuisine was then very much founded on what they had available to them such as wheat, olive oil, and wine. Back then, meat, wasn’t really consumed, and there was more seafood and fish. By 334 BC, Alexander the Great extended the Greek Empire’s reach all the way to India and as a result, you’ll see northern and eastern influences in Greek food today.

Greek food is very veggie forward, utilizing veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes. You’ll find lots of dishes with feta cheese, olives, and popular meats are souvlaki and gyros. Us Greek’s also love a good dip and we eat a lot of tzatziki with our dishes. You’ll see all of these things in this list of Greek recipes.
Yes! Parts of Greece are known as some of the healthiest in the world due to their diet of many veggies, whole grains, fish, and very little dairy.
You’ll basically find oregano in MANY Greek recipes, and/or sprinkled on top of our dishes. According to mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty created oregano and it’s now a symbol of happiness and joy.
